The Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its strike, which commenced on February 18, 2025. This decision was reached on Saturday, February 22, following the intervention of Governor Uba Sani.
Dr. Peter Adamu, the KASU ASUU Chairman, announced the suspension in a statement on Monday, February 24. He commended Governor Sani for his prompt leadership in addressing the union's concerns. The state government demonstrated goodwill by releasing funds to pay 60% of the withheld September 2017 salaries and the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) supervision allowances for five sessions.
Additionally, the government has committed to a timeline for settling other outstanding entitlements, including five months' withheld salaries from May to September 2022, promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), pension remittances from 2009 to 2019, death benefits, and group life assurance.
Dr. Adamu noted that the government's intervention marks a departure from previous instances where union members faced victimization for participating in lawful strikes. He urged all academic staff to resume their duties and continue providing invaluable services to the university community.
The suspension of the strike is expected to restore normal academic activities at Kaduna State University, benefiting both staff and students.
